Caedmon's Call - Hands of the Potter

Back to Sermons in Song >>>

“Hands of the Potter” off of the CD entitled Back Home is a song about repenting and returning to the Lord after going astray. Based off of the story of the Prodigal son found in Luke 15:11-32 this song is your typical song of repentance and return except it brings into the discussion an idea from an Old Testament passage Isaiah 64:8 which refers to God’s people as clay and God as their potter. Thus this song gives us two pictures which it is good for us to meditate on. 1) one of a wayward son who has ruined his life and finally come to his senses realizing his father has always had his best interest at heart and he has always loved his son and would never forsake him. 2) one of a skilled craftsman who wants to create a masterpiece for his glory. In either case we are in the hands of Father God and He is more than able to pick up the pieces and mold us into what He wants us to be. He truly does know best. So, as you go thru this week if you stumble and fall into sin call out to your loving Father who has promised to forgive and cleanse you if you confess your sins (1 John). Then praise Him for being your potter who can mold you into His own image.

In closing I will leave you with these words from the book of Jude:

24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy,

25to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.

"Hands of the Potter"

Lyrics and Music by Caedmon's Call

From the Record: Back Home, Track #4.

Lord if I'm the clay
Then I've been left out in the sun
Cracked and dry,
Like the mud from the sty
Still clinging to the prodigal son

But I'm on my way back home
Yes I'm on my way back home

Into the hands (into the hands)
That made wine (wine) from the water
Into the hands (into the hands)
The hands of the potter

Lord if I'm the clay then
Let your living water flow
Soften up my edges, lord,
So everyone will know

But I'm on my way back home
Yes I'm on my way back home

And Lord,
When you listen for the song of my life
Let it be, let it be, a song so sweet
Let it be, let it be, a song so sweet
Let it be...

Lord, if I'm the clay then lay me down
On your spinning wheel
Shape me into something you can fill
With something real

And I'll be on my way back home
Yes I'm on my way back home
