Song:
What is it? and Why is it here?
When I was younger the Lord used the 1st, 2nd,
and 3rd, generation of Contemporary Christian musicians
to draw me to himself. I still cherish the music of Larry Norman,
Keith Green, Resurrection Band, Michael Card, 2nd Chapter
of Acts, Dan Peek, Petra, and Steve Camp as well as many others who
set the foundation for today’s Christian music scene. It was these
artists and there desire to share the word of God through their
music which inspired another generation of musicians which God used
to save me. Through the strong, heart piercing lyrics of groups
like: Newsboys, Steve Taylor, Stephen Curtis Chapman, DC Talk, Audio
Adrenaline, Code of Ethics, Jars of Clay, Third Day, Caedmon’s Call,
Rich Mullins, James Vanvalkenburg, Jeff Pollard (and even Carman) as
well as others God invaded my heart and challenged my life, drawing
me to Himself and through His design saved my soul and opened His
word to my searching heart. Over the years the music of those
mentioned above has challenged my walk, encouraged me and even
taught me time and again deep theological truths which are found in
God’s word. How did they do that? Well, some of them did it through
lyrics God pointed out to me were very strong doctrinally through
having the Holy Spirit show me how they lined up with the scriptures
my parents, mentors and Pastors were preaching on, as well as those
I had become aware of through my bible time and as a result I
studied those doctrinal ideas and trusted the Lord to show me if
they were sound or not. Others accomplished it thru catchy lyrics
which brought realities of both scripture and life easily to mind
and thus pointed me to God’s word for answers to those situations in
life.
Now, admittedly all of these artists have done things
they are not proud of and so has this generation of artist such as
Mercy me, David Crowder Band, Down Here, Shane and Shane ect. But
the bottom line is these artists have been used of God as they have
struggled to learn what it means to be a Christian musician. I am
living proof and I know many others who have been blessed in the
same way. So, what is Sermons in Song? It is a humble effort to
clearly connect the dots between new and old music students come
across in the Christian music scene and the holy scriptures of God.
And, why is it here? Why do we do it? We have decided to do it so
that: 1) we can try to explain songs you may like but don’t
understand. 2) we can explain certain songs which have lyrics which
teach unsound doctrine which can lead you astray. 3) we can
introduce you to Christian musicians we have come across which you
may not know of yet 4) we can give you, the student yet another
avenue which will point you to Jesus. So check out our Sermons in
Song, ask questions, make suggestions and most of all don’t take our
word for it but test what we say with God’s Holy Word and trust His
Holy Spirit to teach you His Truth. God bless and we hope these
humble sermons and songs will bless your walk with the Lord.
