This week in Sermons in Song is the Newsboys “the Mission,” a song
which is based off of Christ’s great commission to his disciples and
the church. Found in some form at the end of all the gospels, as
well as the book of Acts, and emphasized in the epistles of the
apostles the mission of sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ was and
is paramount in importance. In fact, we have seen this in our
reading of 1st John for the very first sentence reveals
to us the apostle Johns passion for evangelism. This song, is
equally passionate and in a simple yet powerful way it notes the
reality and importance of God’s commission, its impact on our lives
(and the lives of all believers), and the amazing examples of how it
has been done in the past; reminding us we are not in it alone. We
do not and can not cause the growth: that is God’s work. Rather we
plant, water, cultivate and gather in the harvest as God through His
Spirit works His miracle of making the Gospel come to life in new
believers. It is a privilege and a glory and it should set our
hearts on fire. So go to your local book store or your library and
start studying up on those who have gone before us and passed on the
gospel message. Then continue in diligently seeking to know the Lord
through His word and spirit and walk with Him as he uses you to
carry on the same message to those yet to be born again.
