Matt Redman - Undignified

Back to Sermons in Song>>>

“ Undignified,” off of Matt Redman’s CD entitled Not to US, is a song about rejoicing in God and caring more of what He thinks than what society thinks. It is based off of the story of King David’s rejoicing found in 2 Samuel 6:1-23. Although it was written in 1995, it has remained popular and has been covered by such artists as Sonic Flood, Darrell Evans, Chris Tomlin and, most recently, The David Crowder Band. Why would such a song be so timeless? Perhaps, it is because of God’s desire for His glory. The story of David’s rejoicing is a story about God’s glory and it goes like this:

“David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the LORD with all kinds of instruments made of fir wood, and with lyres, harps, tambourines, castanets and cymbals.. . . David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the city of David with gladness.

13And so it was, that when the bearers of the ark of the LORD had gone six paces, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling.

14And David was dancing before the LORD with all his might, and David was wearing a linen ephod.

15So David and all the house of Israel were bringing up the ark of the LORD with shouting and the sound of the trumpet.

16Then it happened as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David that Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart.

17So they brought in the ark of the LORD and set it in its place inside the tent which David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.

18When David had finished offering the burnt offering and the peace offering, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts.

19Further, he distributed to all the people, to all the multitude of Israel, both to men and women, a cake of bread and one of dates and one of raisins to each one. Then all the people departed each to his house.

20But when David returned to bless his household, Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, "How the king of Israel distinguished himself today! He uncovered himself today in the eyes of his servants' maids as one of the foolish ones shamelessly uncovers himself!"

21So David said to Michal, "It was before the LORD, who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel; therefore I will celebrate before the LORD.

22"I will be more lightly esteemed than this and will be humble in my own eyes, but with the maids of whom you have spoken, with them I will be distinguished."

23Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.

So what happened? David rejoiced in His Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and David, and he humbled himself in His sight. But David’s wife did not approve saying, that it was no way for a king to act. Yet, David knew better. He knew God made him and He could break him, but most importantly he knew God loved him and HE had rescued him many times over so David stood by his decision to humble himself before the Lord and David’s wife was punished by God for condemning him for doing so.

So what does that mean to you and me? It means that we should as Paul says in the word of God, “rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice,” (Philippians 1:4),

17For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

18For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written:
"I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."

20Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength.

26Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29so that no one may boast before him. 30It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."

1 Corinthians 1:17-31

Notice the portion highlighted in red for it states, Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29so that no one may boast before him. “That is why we are to rejoice and that is why David rejoiced. God had taken him from being a poor Sheppard boy to a man who knew God face to face, a man who God said was a man after His own heart, and a humble King among men. “Behold what manner of Love the Father has bestowed upon us that we should be called the children of God” (1 John 3:1). Yes we rejoice in Him and make fools of ourselves because He has become our propitiatory sacrifice (1 John 2:2), He is our advocate (1 John 2:1), our righteousness (Romans 1:16-17a and 3:21-26, our sympathetic high priest (Hebrews 4:15-16; 7:24-8:2; 10:14-23) etc. and one day we will be like Him( 1 John 3:2). Therefore, let us rejoice. Let all who call Jesus Lord and Savior rejoice and worship Him in Humbleness, no matter what, even if those we hold dear disown us for Jesus said, those who lose their life for His sake will find it. Father, may we rejoice in you even as David did.

"Undignified"

Lyrics by Matt Redman

From the record: Not to Us.

I will dance, I will sing, to be mad for my king.
Nothing, Lord, is hindering the passion in my soul.
I will dance, I will sing, to be mad for my king.
Nothing, Lord, is hindering the passion in my soul.
I will dance, I will sing, to be mad for my king.
Nothing, Lord, is hindering the passion in my soul.
I will dance, I will sing, to be mad for my king.
Nothing, Lord, is hindering the passion in my soul.
And I'll become even more undignified than this.
Some may say it's foolishness,
I will dance, I will sing, to be mad for my king.
Nothing, Lord, is hindering the passion in my soul.
I will dance, I will sing, to be mad for my king.
Nothing, Lord, is hindering the passion in my soul.
And I'll become even more undignified than this.
Some would say it's foolishness,
But I'll become even more undignified than this.
Leave my pride by my side.
And I'll become even more undignified than this.
Some would say it's foolishness,
But I'll become even more undignified than this.
Leave my pride by my side.
And I'll become even more undignified than this.
Some would say it's foolishness,
But I'll become even more undignified than this.
Leave my pride by my side.
Na na na na na na HEY!
Na na na na na na HEY!
Na na na na na na HEY!
Na na na na na na HEY!
Na na na na na na HEY!
Na na na na na na HEY!
Na na na na na na HEY!
IT'S ALL FOR YOU MY LORD!!!!
